About the archive

The Serrin Coast Survey was an independent survey of this coast, founded in 1971 by the cartographer Vera Lansing, with Elena Loh as geodesist and Tomas Iveri as its radio and sound engineer. It published twelve plates at 1:10,000 between 1972 and 1976 and was taken into the custody of the National Cartographic Directorate in 1989. Vera Lansing and Elena Loh are no longer with us. Tomas Iveri left the coast after the transfer and has not been traced.

What survived is here: the plates, some letters, some photographs, and a radio room nobody has had the heart to switch off. Nothing is explained. The Survey never explained itself either.

Some of what the archive holds is kept in the stacks and must be asked for by name. The request slip is at the foot of every page. A laptop helps; so does patience.

Scanning log

Every plate was scanned in April 2024 and reduced for the web. The SHA-256 checksum of each file was recorded the day it was scanned. If a file ever stops matching its record, somebody has been in the archive.
